Successful S1000D Series – ‘Successful Contracting for S1000D’

Live Lessons from TD-iQ

Did you miss our TD-iQ Live Lesson where we looked at the FIVE top things you should be able to answer around S1000D?

When we contract for technical publications and ask for standards or specifications, we are implying a number of things, yet many projects do not fully understand what they are actually asking for, yet they still ask for it! What are the top five things we believe you MUST be able to answer or understand before you even consider requesting S1000D as a project mandated requirement? Well in this TD-iQ LIVE LESSON we looked at them, giving real examples of why there is conflict and confusion as well as the direct and indirect implications of getting it wrong!

Contracts that simply state S1000D as a requirement demonstrate a lack of understanding of what the implications actually are of what they are asking – Michael Ingledew

The full presentation from this TD-iQ LIVE Lesson is now available to TD-iQ subscribers via your dashboard. If you are not a TD-iQ subscriber you can learn more about how you can join us HERE

During this lesson we looked at:

  • What are you actually asking for? Do you REALLY know what you are asking for? Do you know the differences and implications of what you are asking for? If not – then [deep sigh] why are you asking for it?
  • What are you actually expecting and what is your vision of technical publications and support information on your project? Do you know? Do you care?
  • Do you know the cost deltas? Do you understand the Cost Curve compared to traditional technical publications? It may just surprise you!
  • What about software, skills, management and deployment of this information?
  • We closed this Live Lesson with what S1000D COULD be good for a project but we are also realistic here at TDW and state where S1000D would NOT be a good fit!

Our next LIVE Lesson in the successful S1000D series – “Creating an S1000D DMRL from Legacy Data (including ATA CMM’s)” – 17th April – join us LIVE on TD-iQ. In this LIVE lesson we will look at the process of defining a DMRL from a legacy manual, what process we need to go through and how we then bring all of the content back together to get back to where we need to be. TD-iQ subscribers may enrol on this course as part of your standard subscription.

Mike Ingledew

A trained aircraft engineer (rotorcraft), I entered in to the field of technical information writing S1000D data modules on a major European military platform.

After a series of high profile project roles and the privilege of supporting clients worldwide, I ended my 'employed' career at a subsidiary of Boeing Aircraft after I decided to leave and focus on TDW full-time.

From my time supporting clients worldwide, I could see that there was a market need for an independent organisation that could be a trusted advisory source for those needing to implement successful technical information strategies.

I am passionate about the art of technical communications and the process, software and skills needed in our market.
